UPEI, Holland College tuitions going up this fall
Tuition going up 2% for the majority of students at both institutions
Tuition at both the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College will be going up this fall.
UPEI tuition will be going up by 2 per cent for all students, including international students, those in graduate programs and students at the Atlantic Veterinary College.
At Holland College, tuition for domestic students will go up 2 per cent and 14 per cent for international students entering their first year.
The increases will come into effect for the 2022 fall semester.
UPEI said the university has to balance the need for additional revenues with the desire to provide affordable tuition. Officials said tuition represents about 40 per cent of operating revenues every year.
For undergraduate students, tuition will still be among the lowest in the Maritime region, officials said.
Holland College president Sandy MacDonald said the tuition increases at his school are meant to cover rising costs, including those of salary and benefit increases for faculty and staff.
"We've been a very, very, very good buy for international students for quite some time," he said. "We remain an excellent buy given that we are still $1,600 dollars a year cheaper than any other college in Atlantic Canada."
First-year international students at Holland College will be paying about $5,000 in tuition fees this fall as opposed to $4,400 last year.
