St. Peters Harbour land donated for protection by McEwen family
Over 11 hectares were donated by the family, total protected lands in the area is now 149 hectares
An area of land at St. Peters Harbour is now protected thanks to a donation from a Prince Edward Island family who owned it for 200 years.
The land was given to the Nature Conservancy of Canada by siblings in memory of their parents and was unveiled Friday as the Clarence and Alice McEwen Nature Reserve.

Over 11 hectares were donated by the family, bringing the total of protected lands in the area to 149 hectares.
The land is a combination of wetland, sand dune and shore frontage property.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada says the land is home to a number of shore birds, including the endangered piping plover. The group says some of the birds have been recorded nesting along the coast.
St Peters Harbour is about 25 kilometres east of Charlottetown.
