Humane Society recommends microchips for pets
Society says people bring in lost pets daily
The P.E.I. Humane Society says summer is the season when pets are most likely to go missing.
It is recommending that pet owners have their animals implanted with a microchip so they're easier to identify if and when someone finds them.
The implants are about the size of a grain of rice and offer an alternative to the tattoo identification system.
Donna Marie, an animal protection officer with the society, says both cats and dogs travel further in the summer without snowbanks in the way.
"Pets like to get outdoors," she said. "There's a smorgasbord of smells out there that they like to follow and travel and they like to explore,” she said.
The Humane Society says people bring in lost pets daily.
Last year, the society reunited 180 lost dogs and 42 lost cats with their owners.
