Floods hit P.E.I. east and west

Heavy rains and a lot of snow melt are causing flood conditions in the east and west of P.E.I.

In Alberton two streets are flooded, and there is concern about how the town pond and sewage lagoon will handle extra water. Coun. Natasha Dunn told CBC News Wednesday morning two streets are closed so far and the rush of water is not slowing.

"The water is coming from even a kilometre away, through the fields and behind people's homes," said Dunn.

"It's crossing into the town pond, which then is flooding Poplar Street and then it's flooding Argyle Street, and then our town lagoon is just past that as well."

In the eastern end of the Island a family in Souris West is also worried about rising water.

Nancy Dingwell said some of the yard work her father had done around the family home gave way on Tuesday.

"A lot of worrying, if it was going to head into the basement, and stuff like that, of the neighbour's and mom's, but everything kind of calmed down a little bit," said Dingwell.

"The way it broke last night we're kind of hoping that it will stay the way it is right now, just the normal flow coming through."

A provincial highway crew arrived to help, and so far the flow of water is being directed away from the home.
