Charlottetown Run for the Cure raises close to $110K for breast cancer
About 600 people from across the Island participated
A sea of runners clad in pink took over downtown Charlottetown streets Sunday and raised close to $110,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Darlene DeLong, the honourary chairwoman for this year's run and a breast cancer survivor, says it was about much more than just raising money.
"It's about community. It's about support for anybody that has a breast cancer diagnosis, but also their families and their friends," she said.
"It's to know that yes, it is a scary time, but there is lots of support. There's great treatments, but we need to have more research to find a cure for this disease."
Several downtown streets were closed to traffic between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. for the event.
Charlottetown City Police escorted participants along the route.
Kelly Hudson, the fundraising officer for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's Atlantic region, expected hundreds to travel from across the Island to participate in the race.
"We believe that every dollar counts and it all goes to a great cause at the end of the day. Every dollar is appreciated, and overwhelming, and we give much gratitude to every dollar we receive," she said.
Last year the foundation raised a total of $24 million nationally from the run, more than half of its overall fundraising revenue.
