Battle of Britain spitfire plane model on display in Summerside
The model is 7 metres by 8.5 metres
A nearly life-size model of a Second World War spitfire plane will be on display in Summerside Saturday with the hope of better connecting people to what veterans have done for Canadians.
A total of 112 Canadian pilots flew in the Battle of Britain and it has been 75 years since the battle took place.
The model is built to a three-quarter scale and measures seven metres by 8.5 metres and people can sit in the plane and take pictures.
Colin Stephenson is the executive director of the Atlantic Canada International Air Show. He says the exhibit allows people to really get up close and personal with it.
"It's very much an interactive hands-on piece. We want people to get up close. We want people to learn about the aircraft and what it represents when it comes to the veterans that were involved not only in the Battle of Britain, but in all of our wars and conflicts overseas. It just brings stories to the forefront. It gives people more of a connection to what our veterans have done for us," he said.
The plane will be on display at Credit Union Place between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. before the volleyball match between Canada and Bulgaria.
The 25-year-old model has been restored by Atlantic Canada International Air Show volunteers and staff at Vector Aerospace.
