Two Kingston Police special constables have been charged with assault and suspended without pay, the force announced Thursday.

It comes after an incident that occurred in June while both were on duty.

Kingston Police learned about the incident on July 3, it said in a media release.

The Ottawa Police Service was then asked to conduct an independent investigation.

Ottawa police charged Chris Nadeau and Chad Mandigo Thursday with one count each of assault and one count each of aggravated assault.

They were released on a promise to appear in court at a future date.

They're the second and third members of the force to have criminal charges against them announced in the past week.

On Feb. 21, Kingston Police said a sergeant had been charged with sexual assault in a separate incident that happened while he was off duty in August.

That officer was also suspended without pay — an option only recently made possible under new legislation that came into affect last April.
