Ottawa councillor Jody Mitic releases military memoir

Ottawa city councillor Jody Mitic describes his time as a Canadian Armed Forces sniper in Afghanistan — and the personal battles he faced back home in Canada after losing both legs in a landmine explosion — in his military memoir Unflinching: The Making of a Canadian Sniper.

The book, launched Thursday night at the Canadian War Museum, details his struggle with depression and how he overcame an addiction to Oxycontin following the war.

The village was supposedly rife with Taliban soldiers and Jody's assignment was to flush them out. But that village was also littered with landmines. Jody took a step that changed his life forever.

Mitic and three other snipers were infiltrating an Afghan village to flush out Taliban soldiers when he stepped on a landmine in January 2007.

Less than eight years later, Mitic was elected to his first term as councillor for Ottawa's Innes ward in October 2014.
