Police in Gatineau, Que., arrested three people on charges of animal cruelty Tuesday after they found the carcasses of more than 40 dogs and cats in the backyard of a home in the Aylmer sector of the city.

Police in Gatineau, Que., arrested three people on charges of animal cruelty Tuesday after they found the carcasses of more than 40 dogs and cats in the backyard of a home in the Aylmer sector of the city.

Police and firefighters arrived at a house on rue Roméo-Gendron at 10 a.m. Tuesday where they found the remains of the animals in various states of decay.

They also found one dog and one cat alive in the house.

Much of the interior of the house was covered in animal excrement, police said.

They arrested a woman in her 60s as well as her son and daughter, both in their 40s. All three are facing charges of cruelty to animals. They appeared in court Tuesday afternoon.
