Highway 17 reopens after fatal crash near Pembroke

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a 22-year-old local man was killed in a fiery crash that closed Highway 17 between Pembroke and Cobden Tuesday morning.

The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. just west of Mountain and Cornerview roads in Whitewater Township, according to an OPP news release.

The unnamed victim from nearby North Algona Wilberforce was driving west when he crossed the centre line and collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer, police said.

The victim's vehicle caught fire and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The truck driver was not seriously injured.

The crash happened about 17 kilometres southeast of downtown Pembroke and 105 kilometres west of downtown Ottawa.

A 23-kilometre stretch of the highway, which is part of the Trans-Canada Highway, remained closed between Paul Martin Drive in Pembroke and Main Street in Cobden until about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.
