RCMP in Nova Scotia have charged a 26-year-old man with first-degree murder and attempted murder following a shooting earlier this year in North Preston.

Daniel Romeo Downey was arrested Wednesday in Dartmouth. He made his first appearance in provincial court on Thursday morning.

Police responded to a report of a shooting on Downey Road in North Preston on March 14.

The victim, 18-year-old Dieago Downey, was found wounded at the scene. He died later in hospital and his death was ruled a homicide.

RCMP Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay said another man who was at the scene when the shooting occurred was the intended target. That man was not harmed.

Tremblay would not say Thursday whether the accused and the victim are related, but he said they knew each other.

Daniel Downey is due back in court in July. He remains in custody.
