N.S. police warn of new text message scam impersonating RCMP
Mounties say they will never ask for personal information through text or email
Nova Scotia RCMP are advising the public to steer clear of a new phishing scam being carried out via text message.
In a release Friday, police said they've learned that people have been receiving unsolicited text messages from scammers impersonating the Mounties.
The messages say that the RCMP have been unable to deliver court documents and ask recipients to follow a link to a website to reschedule their delivery to "avoid missing your court date."
"Scammers have created what appears to be a legitimate notification that brings you to a convincing website," said Cpl. Mitch Thompson in the release.
RCMP never ask for personal information through text messaging or email, he said.
Anyone who has received the message should not click on the link or share any personal information, including their address, date of birth or banking information, police said.
Scammers have the ability to spoof phone numbers and websites to make them look authentic, the release said.
That's why it's important to avoid clicking on links from unverified sources, and only access the websites of government agencies through official links, police said.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim is urged to contact their local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
