A medical clinic in Mahone Bay, N.S., is closed until further notice and appointments are being temporarily relocated following damage caused by a mercury spill last week, says the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

Communications adviser Keith Corcoran told CBC News in an email that the damage at the Mahone Bay Medical Center happened while an old wall-mounted blood pressure machine, which contains a few grams of mercury, was being removed from the facility.

He said no one was injured.

Cleanup efforts have been ongoing and Corcoran said the health authority hopes to determine within the next week when services can resume.

In the meantime, in-person appointments are being relocated to other clinics in neighbouring Lunenburg and Bridgewater.

Patients with previously booked appointments are being contacted directly with instructions, said Corcoran, and people can call the clinic to book an appointment or get updated information.
