Future of St. Pat's building up in the air

It's been two years since students at St. Patrick's-Alexandra School in Halifax said goodbye to their classroom, but talks continue about what should happen with the contentious site.

The Halifax region originally made a deal to sell the property to a developer, but several community groups challenged the move in court, and a judge struck down the deal.

Close to 130 people showed up to a public meeting Tuesday night at Halifax's North End Memorial Public Library to voice their concern about what should happen to the old school.

Christina Hubley is involved with the North End group Hope Blooms and said she doesn't want to see condos .

"There's already enough housing here."

Glenn Knockwood, youth co-ordinator at the Micmac Native Friendship Centre on Gottingen Street, said he pictures a community centre.

"It takes a community to a grow a child, not condos," he said. "I hope that city council will listen to the community groups and say it's a no brainer that the people of this community should have that space."

Within the next few weeks HRM staff will submit a notice to non-profit groups in the community asking for written proposals for the site.

Groups will have 90 days to submit an application.
