Funeral to be held for 3 children killed in Halifax-area house fire

Three children who were killed in a house fire in the Halifax area earlier this month are being remembered for their unique personalities and for various hobbies and interests that define the innocence of childhood.

Service to take place 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Church in Lower Sackville, N.S.

One child loved superheroes. Another loved to dance. The third loved the outdoors.

Cayson Jermaine Loppie, 5, Alauna Marie Loppie, 9, and Chloe Margaret "Clo-Clo" Greenough Steiger, 6, died as a result of a house fire earlier this month in Lower Sackville, N.S.

Their obituaries paint a heartbreaking picture of their innocence.

Cayson loved superheroes "and became one as an organ donor," it said on Arbor Memorial website.

The obituary said he was excited to start primary last September at Cavalier Drive Elementary.

"He was the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. He loved tormenting his sisters and loving on them just the same. He loved deeply and was a fierce protector," the obituary said.

Cayson, also described as "Casey" in the obituary, had a special bond with his mother and loved being her sidekick. He also loved the colour blue, Spiderman and wrestling with his father.

"Cayson has forever changed the name of KitKats to "KittyKat" bars for so many people," it said.

"He was looking forward to celebrating his sixth birthday in just a few days. His big, brown, beautiful eyes could tell you exactly what he was thinking — and it was usually mischievous."

An obituary for Alauna described her as an "old soul" who cared deeply for her friends and family, especially her siblings.

"She was an avid singer and loved dancing competitively with her dance team at Motion Dance Center," it said. "She loved shopping and the colour purple.

"But her favourite thing to do was to spend time at BeechBrook Campground with her family, friends and dogs."

'Chloe loved the colours pink and purple'

Both Cayson and Alauna's obituaries said they will be missed by their parents, Tanya Steiger and Jermaine Loppie, by their sisters Akaysia, Abianna and Mireya, as well as many other family and friends.

Chloe, described as a "special cousin" to Cayson and Alauna, loved the outdoors, swimming and fishing, her obituary said. It said she practised taekwondo and was a Beaver.

"She loved all animals, colouring, puzzles, dancing, riding her bike and playing with her baby dolls and Barbies," it said.

"Chloe loved the colours pink and purple, wearing makeup and jewelry and playing with her brother Cayson's monster trucks."

The obituary said she will be missed by her parents Charles Steiger and Natalie Greenough as well as many other family members.

Funeral details

A funeral for all three children will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Rock Church in Lower Sackville, N.S. It will also be streamed online for those who cannot attend in person.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency has said they don't believe the fire on Jan. 11 is suspicious.

Steiger, Loppie and a two-year-old child were also in the home at the time of the fire.

Steiger and the two-year-old made it out unharmed, while Loppie was rescued by a neighbour and rushed to hospital. He was in stable condition a few days later.

An online fundraiser for the family has raised more than $140,000.
