Freezing rain, ice pellets in Maritimes weekend forecast

The Maritimes should prepare for another blast of winter this weekend, according to the latest weather forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

A special weather statement for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island has been issued, warning of a potential winter storm.

On Saturday, a trough of low pressure will slowly move over the Maritimes and remain over the region throughout the weekend. There is potential for significant snow, freezing rain, ice pellets and blowing snow on Sunday.

In Nova Scotia, the statement warns there is a possibility for "significant period of freezing rain and ice pellets on Sunday."

People in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island could face "significant snow" in addition to the freezing rain and ice pellets.

It's still too early to predict how much snow or freezing rain will fall, or how long it will last, said the statement.

Environment Canada warns anyone planning to travel on Sunday to watch the forecast carefully.
