10-year-old writes letter to MLA over potholes in Cape Breton
Transportation minister says patchwork will be done in coming weeks
A 10-year-old Cape Breton boy is issuing a heartfelt plea to the government, asking the province to repair potholes near his home in Port Morien near Glace Bay.
Ethan Murrant feels the potholes are dangerous and wants the government to fix them so he and his friends can be safe riding their bicycles to school.
Ethan rides his bicycle every day along Long Beach Road, a road that’s riddled with potholes.
“I think it’s very dangerous for driving your bike,” said Ethan.
“It's kind of scary because when the cars are coming and they're swerving around the potholes, I don't really like it,” he said.
His mother, Donna Martell, said Ethan was upset after coming home from school with his bike because a car had swerved at him.
“I told him that he couldn't ride his bike anymore,” she said. "So he was upset with me and that's how the letter came about. I told him not to be upset with me but to do something about it.”
She told her son to send a letter to their local MLA.
“I would like them to either put a bike lane in, or a sidewalk or fill in the potholes at least,” said Ethan.
His mother agrees.
“I think the road is in very bad shape and it needs to be dealt with and it shouldn't have taken a 10-year-old to bring it to light,” she said. “But it has, and I hope someone is paying attention and I hope they do get something done about it.”
Geoff MacLellan, the transportation minister, met with Ethan.
MacLellan said the Long Beach Road isn't on the province's priority list to be paved, but in coming weeks patchwork will be done to fill in the potholes.
