Yellowknife gas prices drop after holding steady for 3 years
3 of 4 gas stations lower price by 4 cents
There was a slight thawing of Yellowknife's frozen gasoline prices on Wednesday as three of the city's four gas stations lowered the price of regular unleaded by four cents.
Prices had remained virtually unchanged for three years, with the four self-serve stations in the city all charging the same price — 138.9 cents.
The price drop comes as Yellowknife city council is about to wade into the debate at its next meeting. The city's MLAs have been complaining for more than a year about the lack of competition among city gas stations.
On Monday, Dan McTeague, a gas price analyst with the website Tomorrow's Gas Price Today, estimated Yellowknife's gas stations were making more than 30 cents on every litre they sold — among the biggest profit margins in the country.
