Woman dies after wheelchair hit by truck in Whitehorse
The coroner has not released the name of the victim who was pronounced dead at the Whitehorse hospital
The RCMP are investigating the scene of a fatal crash in downtown Whitehorse.
A 71-year-old woman operating a motorized wheelchair was struck by pickup truck on Second Avenue near Strickland Street at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
The woman was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released.
The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as a 72-year-old woman. RCMP said the cause of the collision hasn't been determined, but alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor.
Police said it's too early to say if any charges will be laid.
The RCMP has called in a "collision reconstructionist" to investigate the scene of the accident.
The southbound lane of Second Avenue will remain closed until the scene investigation concludes. Traffic is being re-routed to Third Avenue between Alexander and Jarvis streets.
