Snookie Catholique resigns as N.W.T. languages commissioner

The territorial government says Catholique cited personal reasons for her resignation, which takes effect immediately.

Exit comes after little more than 1 year on the job, complaints about lack of support

The Northwest Territories' languages commissioner has resigned after just over a year of service, the territorial government announced Friday.

The government says Snookie Catholique cited personal reasons for her resignation, which takes effect immediately.

Snookie Catholique had previously complained that she didn't have a staff, or a proper office, to carry out her duties as languages commissioner. (Chantal Dubuc/CBC)

Catholique began her post in December 2013. Last fall there were complaints of a backlog of cases, which she attributed to a lack of staff or a proper office.

She declined to comment on her exit.

"I wish her well in her future endeavours," said Jackie Jacobson, the Speaker of the N.W.T. legislative assembly.

Former languages commissioner Shannon Gullberg has been appointed as Catholique's acting replacement.
