A 19-year-old man is facing a second-degree murder charge in Whitehorse after the death of a minor, according to court records.

Police said in a press release on New Year's Day that they'd been called to a home near the corner of 7th Avenue and Main Street at 3:40 p.m. that day, where they found a male with critical injuries. Police said despite first aid from paramedics at the scene, the person died.

RCMP said a male suspect was identified quickly and then arrested.

Court documents show Jahki Rudyk, 19, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a minor. A publication ban covers the name of the person who died.

Rudyk also faces a charge of possessing a shotgun without a licence.

Rudyk appeared in court Thursday by video and is scheduled to appear next on Jan. 7.

Police said Wednesday that parts of downtown Whitehorse were being held as their homicide investigation continued. They said there's no more threat to the public.
