Dawson City's annual ice bridge is open to traffic once again

It's the time all West Dawson, and Dawson City residents have been waiting for.

The town's ice bridge is officially open to traffic.

The Department of Highways and Public announced Tuesday the crossing is open to light vehicles weighing up to 5,000 kg.

It's welcome news for West Dawson resident Sebastien Weisser. Last year the Yukon River didn't fully freeze, forcing people to travel five kilometres to a place where it was safe to cross.

"We're definitely looking forward to be able to drive over again," he said. "And obviously good news for everyone. Along with anyone else I'll be happy to take advantage of it in the next few days to check it out."

Weisser said he was confident the Yukon river would freeze over this year. He works on the George Black Ferry during the open-water season and spends winters in West Dawson. He said easier access to food, supplies, and emergency services gives him a sense of relief.

"We had a few medevacs happen during freeze up this year," Weisser said.

"Thankfully we had the chopper available but I think it's a relief knowing we don't have to worry and soon we'll be able to bring anybody in need across, at least by vehicle until the ambulance can safely come across, or a fire truck can come across."
