Group wants government to protect salmon

The Atlantic Salmon Federation wants the federal government to do more to protect salmon stocks.

Bill Taylor, president of the federation, said commercial fishing off the coasts of Greenland is hurting salmon stocks in New Brunswick.

According to Taylor, the number of large salmon that returned to New Brunswick waters to spawn last year was the second lowest that it's been in four decades.

Taylor said Greenland won't exercise restraint when it comes to fishing unless other countries like Canada do as well.

Taylor said he'd like to see government ban the use of gill nets, often used by aboriginal people fishing off the coast of Labrador.

He said those nets gather and destroy everything in their path.

Taylor would like to see trap nets used instead, which allow for the release of smaller fish.
