RCMP are investigating after they stumbled upon 40,000 pills in a wooded area near West Branch Road, in West Branch, about 19 kilometres southwest of Richibucto.

The pills, believed to be methamphetamine, are worth up to an estimated $200,000, Sgt. Guillaume Bélanger said in a news release Wednesday.

Members of the Richibucto detachment were searching the area as part of an unrelated investigation on Sunday when they discovered the pills, weighing about 18 kilograms, he said.

The release did not provide any information about the other investigation or what prompted officers to search the woods on a Sunday.

Nor did it disclose any additional details about the discovery, such as how the pills were packaged, or whether they were left out in the open.

Bélanger could not immediately be reached for comment.

An RCMP photo shows the pills divided into numerous clear, zip-top, sandwich-sized plastic bags.

Seek public's help

Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in that area in recent months.

"The public plays an important role in helping to reduce, prevent and solve crime, including the trafficking of illegal drugs," Bélanger said.

Anyone with information about illegal drug activity in their neighbourhood, or who suspects illegal drug activity, is asked to contact their local police. They can also provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
