Winter storm promises wild weekend for southern Quebec
Rain, freezing rain, ice pellets, snow and blowing snow are forecast for the southern Quebec region
Montrealers are in store for a mixed bag of snow, freezing rain and ice pellets this last weekend before the holidays.
This is one of the busiest times of year for Canadians to travel across the country, and sometimes the world, visiting loved ones for the holidays. But some people may end up taking shelter at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport while waiting for flights instead.
On Friday, several flights to Newark, Detroit, Chicago as well as both Toronto Pearson and Toronto City airports were cancelled or delayed.
The airport is also reporting delays or cancellations on several southern destinations, including Cuba, Colombia and Florida.
Environment Canada meteorologist André Cantin says people living in southern Quebec could get anywhere from 30 to 60 millimetres of rain and freezing rain, and between 20 and 30 centimetres of new snow between now and Sunday.
“It’s a very complex system that’s moving just south of the border,” Cantin said.
What’s in store for southern Quebec:
- Friday night: Snow turning to ice pellets or freezing rain
- Saturday morning: Freezing drizzle mixed in with other precipitation
- Saturday evening/Sunday morning: Snow, blowing snow, ice pellets and freezing rain
He says the system will be out of our area by Monday afternoon, and conditions look clear for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as well as the days following.
Environment Canada is asking people in the affected areas to be cautious on the road and is warning people who are travelling this holiday season to be prepared for roadblocks and delays.
