A 76-year-old woman has died after she was struck in the head by a falling tree branch Saturday afternoon.

Urgences-santé paramedics responded to the call in Côte Saint-Luc, a suburb on the island of Montreal, shortly before 1 p.m. Montreal police were also dispatched to the area.

Urgences-santé spokesperson Jean-Marie Dufresne said the incident happened on Queen Mary Road, near the corner of Macdonald Avenue.

"She was waiting for the bus," he said.

According to Dufresne, the woman suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital in critical condition. On Tuesday, the coroner's office confirmed that the woman had died.

While police say the incident does not appear to be criminal in nature, the coroner's office is investigating the circumstances of the death.

Ingela Lof, who lives in the neighbourhood, said she has worried about walking beneath the trees on her street because they're old.

"There's a lot of people standing there by the bus stop in the morning," she said. "I walk there and I always peek up and make sure nothing is going to happen."

Côte Saint-Luc city crews were on site Saturday afternoon to trim the remaining part of the branch that broke off earlier in the day.
