Granby man charged with inciting hate online
Suspect allegedly advocated for white Aryan supremacy and praised mass killers
A 38-year-old Granby man who allegedly made threats against minority groups online has been charged with two counts of inciting hate and one count of advocating genocide.
He was arrested at his home Monday and appeared before a judge at the Granby courthouse Tuesday afternoon.
Granby police say the man was not previously known to them.
The man was outed in a blog post by a local CEGEP professor Sunday who identified him as a "neo-Nazi in Granby with terrorist fantasies."
The professor posted screen captures from a Russian social media site, where the suspect allegedly posted a photo advocating white Aryan supremacy, as well as hate speech against Muslims, Jews, black people and homosexuals.
Other posts appear to pay tribute to Marc Lépine, Alexandre Bissonnette and other mass killers.
Some of the posts date as far back as 2017.
Caroline Garand, a spokesperson for the Granby police, said an investigation was launched after a Montreal resident who saw the post contacted police Sunday evening.
After being outed, the man posted on the Russian social media site, saying he was a victim of a slander campaign and had a right to freedom of speech.
