Hazardous winter conditions are expected in parts of western Manitoba due to a winter storm warning, while southern sections of the province are also bracing for a heavy dump of snow.

A strong low-pressure system over southern Saskatchewan is bringing an estimated 10 to 20 centimetres of snow to southern parts of the province, with freezing rain and windier conditions also expected in western parts of the province, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Wind gusts between 50 and 60 km/h are expected to wreck havoc in Westman, causing reduced visibility.

The winter storm warning is in effect for:

  • Brandon, Neepawa, Carberry and Treherne.
  • Dauphin, Russell, Roblin and Winnipegosis.
  • Minnedosa and Riding Mountain National Park.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays, but the national weather agency recommends non-essential travel be postponed until conditions improve.

An accident on the Trans-Canada Highway, about two kilometres west of the village of Sidney, is impacting traffic, according to Manitoba 511.

The heaviest snow is expected to taper off late Sunday, with flurries continuing into Monday morning.

The snowfall warning is in effect for:

  • City of Winnipeg.
  • Arborg, Hecla, Fisher River, Gypsumville and Ashern.
  • Bissett, Victoria Beach, Nopiming Provincial Park and Pine Falls.
  • Dugald, Beausejour and Grand Beach.

The City of Winnipeg is plowing streets, sidewalks and pathways Sunday evening following the city's priority system. Back lanes will be cleared up Monday morning, starting at 7 a.m.

Motorists are being asked to used extreme caution when driving near heavy equipment. Meanwhile, the city's winter route parking ban is in effect, so there's no parking between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. on streets designated as winter routes. Vehicles parked in violation may be ticketed and towed.
