A 36-year-old man is facing charges after a Winnipeg bus driver confiscated a hatchet from him on Friday, when another passenger noticed the weapon, police say.

Police say after the man got on the bus just after noon on Friday, another rider spotted the hatched and called police. The bus driver then took the weapon from the man, who was arrested after he got off the bus at Pioneer Avenue and Main Street, police said in a news release on Saturday.

The man did not threaten anyone on the bus with the hatchet and no one was injured during the incident, but he threatened to kill police officers while in custody.

He was charged with possession of a weapon, two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and failing to comply with conditions of release and probation orders.
