Main Street scene of 2 fires on Saturday night
Fire at the Sutherland Hotel sends a person to hospital
A person was taken to hospital in unstable condition after a fire at the Sutherland Hotel Saturday evening.
Crews were called to the building just after 7 p.m. Saturday, the City of Winnipeg said in a release. When Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews got there, the building's sprinkler system had already extinguished most of the fire, which was declared under control shortly before 7:30 p.m.
Most of the damage was contained to the suite where the fire started, and people in the building were able to get out before WFPS arrived, the release said. The fire remains under investigation and no damage estimate is available.
Crews also responded to another fire at a commercial building on Main Street minutes before midnight, according to the release.
When they arrived it wasn't safe to enter, so they launched a defensive attack and fought the blaze from the outside. It was brought under control around 1:30 a.m., the release said.
Occupants of that building also evacuated before crews arrived, the release said.
The building sustained damage from smoke, fire and water. The City of Winnipeg is also asking residents in the area to be cautious as water used to fight the fire froze and created slippery conditions.
The fire remains under investigation.
