Winnipeg police say a 28-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of Scott Tates, who was stabbed following an argument at a Springfield Road home on Thursday.

Officers were called to the house in the 300 block of Springfield, in the city's River East area, just after 3 a.m. Thursday and found Tates with critical stab wounds.

The 23-year-old died of his injuries in hospital. Police released his name on Friday.

Police say it appears that Tates was involved in a dispute with another man that turned physical.

The other man then left the area but came back a short time later with a weapon and seriously assaulted Tates, according to police.

Christopher Blair McDougall has been charged with second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm, police announced Friday. He is in custody.
