Canadian farm supply and hardware retailer Peavey Mart informed customers Monday it plans to close its Manitoba stores as part of a broader nationwide restructuring.

The Alberta-based retailer announced the closure of locations in Ontario and Nova Scotia on Jan. 23 as part of what it referred to in a post on its website as an "organizational restructuring."

On Jan. 27, stores in Manitoba began posting signs about closures and verbally informing customers they will close within five months.

The chain has two stores in Winnipeg and one each in Brandon, Winkler and Steinbach.

While Peavey Mart did not issue a statement on Monday, staff at all of the Manitoba stores told customers those locations they would close.

Jules Stengel, a retired dairy farmer, said he appreciated the Nairn Avenue store in Winnipeg several times and says it's terrible to see it close.

"I don't know what the circumstances were, why they are closing," he said outside the store. "It's good for the farmers, it's a good location for supply."

Peavey Mart dates back to 1967, when it was known as National Farmway. Its first store was located in Dawson Creek, B.C. The chain is now based in Red Deer, Alta.
