37-year-old inmate dies after serious assault at Stony Mountain Institution: Manitoba RCMP
Man's death inside prison being investigated as homicide, RCMP say
An inmate who was seriously injured at a federal prison in Manitoba on Monday night has died, RCMP say.
Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, Headingley RCMP were sent to Stony Mountain Institution about a report of a serious assault, according to a Tuesday news release.
When officers arrived at the facility just north of Winnipeg, they found Dean Young, 37, seriously injured. He was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries, police said.
RCMP say they're investigating the death as a homicide. They did not specify how Young was injured.
His next of kin has been notified, the Correctional Service of Canada said in its own news release Tuesday.
The Crown agency says at the time of his death, Young had been serving a sentence of eight years, 10 months and 27 days, which began in May 2022, for several offences, including aggravated assault.
The correctional service says it will review the circumstances surrounding Young's death.
