Manitoba cheerleading teams heading to world championships
Squads from Winnipeg, Beausejour invited to compete at 'Olympics of cheerleading'
Two Manitoba cheerleading squads are getting ready to show their best moves at an international competition this week in Florida.
A group of 23 students from Oak Park High School in Winnipeg is flying out on Wednesday for the World School Cheerleading Championships at the Walt Disney World Resort.
A team from Beausejour, Man., is also going to the invitation-only competition, says Oak Park head coach Charwin Dahl, who noted that this will mark the first time Manitoba is represented at the event.
"It's the Olympics of cheerleading — it's kind of what I call it," Dahl told CBC News.
Dahl said the teams will be competing with "the best of the best" squads from 20 countries around the world.
"Honestly, if we make it from semi-finals to finals I'll be happy," she said.
"I don't know if we'll be coming back with a trophy, but it will be phenomenal if we did."
