Man charged in Stony prison death

An inmate at the federal Stony Mountain Institution has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of another inmate last month.

Police said Damiano Cosmo Valente, 69, died June 25 after being stabbed during an altercation at the institution on June 12.

A 24-year-old man, Byron Alden Jacob, has been charged with second degree murder in connection with the incident.

Jacob appeared in a Winnipeg court this morning. He remains in custody, police said.
