The family of the 16-year-old girl abducted near Landmark on Sunday says she was forced into a stranger's truck at knife point.

The girl was walking her dog at around 7:20 a.m. on Ste. Anne's Road, south of Winnipeg, when a man in a pickup truck asked if she needed a ride, RCMP said in a news release.

CBC spoke with a close relative of the teen, but is not naming them to protect the victim's identity.

The girl told her family she was in the truck for about 10 minutes before she was able to jump out when the suspect slowed down.

RCMP said the teen escaped near a dead-end on Road 45 North, approximately 4 km east of Landmark.

The teen ran to the closest home and called police. The relative said the girl also called her parents, who had begun to panic when the dog showed up without their daughter.

The family says the girl was hurt from her fall and is having flashbacks and anxiety.

Man at large

Police searched the area extensively, but couldn't find the man.

The man is described as clean cut, 18 to 22 years old, about five feet, eight inches tall, with a medium build. He has a light brown complexion, short black hair and a round face.

The truck is described as an older black four-door pickup truck, with a dusty exterior.

Sgt. Paul Manaigre, a spokesperson for the Manitoba RCMP, said police are doing everything they can to track down the man. The public should immediately contact RCMP if they notice a suspicious person in their area that matches the description provided.

"This is an extremely serious situation," he said in a news release.
