Three men have been charged — two with second-degree murder and the other with manslaughter — after the November death of a man who had been attacked at the Brandon Correctional Centre more than a month earlier.

The victim, a 44-year-old man, was being held in custody at the provincial medium-security jail in the southwestern Manitoba city when he was attacked on Sept. 26, the Brandon Police Service said in a Friday news release.

The man was seriously injured and rendered unconscious, police said. He was airlifted to Winnipeg's Health Science Centre that night, and died from his injuries on Nov. 11.

Police reviewed video surveillance footage and initially charged three men with aggravated assault. The charges were upgraded after the man's death.

Two men, ages 26 and 34, now face second-degree murder charges. The other man, who was 26 at the time of the attack and is now 27, is charged with manslaughter.

Brandon police did not name either the victim or any of the men accused.
