Manitoba's police watchdog is investigating after an RCMP officer shot and killed a 33-year-old man in Dominion City.

The shooting happened after RCMP from the Morris detachment responded to a call for service at a home in Dominion City, a community of just over 300 people about 80 kilometres south of Winnipeg, around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, police said in a release.

The first officer who arrived at the scene shot the 33-year-old after he exited a garage on the property and advanced toward them while carrying what police described as a metal object, RCMP said in the release.

The man didn't drop the object or stop moving toward the officer despite repeatedly being told to, according to police.

The 33-year-old was taken to hospital by STARS air ambulance in critical condition, where he died. The officer wasn't physically injured in the incident, RCMP said.

Dave Carlson, reeve of the Rural Municipality of Emerson-Franklin and longtime resident of Dominion City, said he couldn't share specifics about the incident because it's an active investigation.

But shooting like this is unheard of in a community that, as of the latest census, only had 319 residents, he said.

"Everyone's shocked.… It's disturbing," Carlson said.

"We used to be the kind of communities where you don't lock your doors and everyone knew their neighbour and … things like this didn't really happen. And now we kind of seem to be in an era where that's not the case."

The Independent Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which is mandated to investigate all serious incidents involving police in the province, is investigating. The RCMP's major crimes unit is also on the scene.
