Icy roads cause long delays on Winnipeg roads
Winnipeg drivers were caught up in a slow-moving commute on Thursday, sitting in gridlock for close to two hours.
According to CBC videographer Sara Calnek, the lineups at the intersection of St. Anne's Road and St. Mary's Road were as far as the eye could see.
One man told her it took 90 minutes to go from Dunkirk Drive and Fermor Avenue to the intersection of St. Mary's and St. Anne's. Another driver had been on St. Anne's road for more than an hour.
Both of them still had a way to go before reaching the Norwood Bridge, where things appeared to open up.
"From there it's smooth sailing," said Calnek, noting there are no major accidents or any other visible reason for the traffic clog, other than road conditions.
"I think it's a traction issue. People just can't get going."
Hundreds of MPI claims roll in
Manitoba Public Insurance has received about 600 claims in the past two days, but officials with the public auto insurer say that's normal for this time of year.
MPI's call centres are open until 8 p.m. Officials say those who get a busy signal during the day should try during the evening.
