A Facebook event called "Singles Night at Safeway" has piqued the interest of Winnipeggers lately, but it's not the first time people in the city have sought love in supermarket aisles.

In this report from Nov. 13, 1986, the CBC's Peter Jordan talks to folks grooving, chatting with new people and, of course, grocery shopping at the Safeway store on River Avenue and Osborne Street — the same store where the latest singles night will be held March 3.

The 1986 event featured live music, dancing, tag-team shopping and other contests. It was one of the first supermarket singles nights in the city, if not beyond.

"Tonight, for the first time anywhere in Canada, it's singles night at Safeway," Jordan proclaimed. "A few lucky shoppers are going to pick up more than groceries."

Fast-forward to this week — more than 500 people have already said on Facebook that they will attend next month's event, which is being organized by a couple of people.

"How will we know who is single!? If you want to be hit on, tie a bag around the handle of your shopping cart or basket," according to the event invitation.
