Firefighters rescue puppy from house fire rubble on Sagkeeng First Nation
'We heard some whimpering coming from under the house,' says volunteer firefighter
An hour after dousing flames at a home on Sagkeeng First Nation Tuesday, volunteer firefighters heard curious sounds emerge from the smouldering rubble.
“We heard some whimpering coming from under the house,” said Chris Edwards, a volunteer firefighter in Sagkeeng. “We breached the foundation and found a puppy.”
Firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire around noon. When they arrived, the roof of the home was engulfed in flames.
One person was home, but left at the time of the fire and was uninjured.
Edwards said the puppy was scared and a little worse for wear after the fire.
“He looked kind of burned in some spots and he actually looks like a very neglected dog,” said Edwards. “He's skinny and he looks scared, so we're feeding him and trying to nurse him back to health.”
Edwards said the man in the home had a wood stove going that wasn’t installed properly. He said he believes that is what caused the fire in the bungalow.
