Three adults and a teen girl were attacked by a large dog that was running loose in Winnipeg's Elmwood neighbourhood on Tuesday afternoon before police officers shot and killed it.

The 16-year-old girl suffered the worst of the attack, which happened around 2:45 p.m. on Stadacona Street near Talbot Avenue.

She required a tourniquet to stop bleeding from serious upper-body injuries, police said in a news release on Wednesday.

The girl was sent to hospital by ambulance while the three adults — a 48-year-old woman, 67-year-old man and 73-year-old man — also suffered upper-body injuries but could take themselves to hospital.

Before police arrived, other people in the area had corralled the dog to prevent more attacks. Police did not say how they did it.

Officers deemed it necessary to shoot the dog to stop the threat to public safety, as it was still displaying very aggressive behaviour, the news release said.

The owner of the dog and the city's Animal Services Agency were notified.

Although serious, none of the 16-year-old's injuries are life-threatening, the news release said.
