Hearing set for inquest into 2012 death of Stony Mountain inmate Cosmo Valente

The Manitoba government has scheduled a standing hearing to determine who will participate in an inquest into the death of Cosmo Valente, a 69-year-old Thunder Bay, Ont., man who was stabbed in prison.

The Manitoba government has scheduled a standing hearing to determine who will participate in an inquest into the death of Cosmo Valente, a 69-year-old Thunder Bay, Ont., man who was stabbed while in prison.

Valente was serving time at Stony Mountain Institution in Manitoba when he was stabbed by another inmate while working in the kitchen on June 12, 2012.

He was taken to Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre by ambulance and had surgery there, but died of complications related to his wounds on June 25, 2012.

The province will hold a hearing Nov. 27 to decide who can participate in the inquest, which will explore the circumstances leading to the death and determine what can be done to prevent similar outcomes in the future.
