Staff at Stony Mountain Institution find over $400K in contraband
Drugs, cell phones and pre-paid SIM cards among items seized
Corrections staff at Manitoba's Stony Mountain Institution seized more than $400,000 worth of contraband at the prison Monday morning.
A team of drug detecting dogs were conducting a search near the perimeter of the minimum security unit when they found the contraband in a package, a spokesperson from Correctional Service Canada told CBC News in an email.
The package contained two cell phones and chargers, five pre-paid SIM cards, 150 tablets of oral steroids and 10 packages of rolling papers that contained 100 papers each.
There were also 1.6 grams of marijuana, three grams of hashish, 56 grams of THC concentrate, 134.6 grams of shatter — a glasslike cannabis derivative — and 984 grams of tobacco.
In all, the contraband has an estimated total value of $420,368.
RCMP were notified and the institution is investigating.
Any criminal charges that may be laid following an investigation will be the responsibility of the RCMP, the CSC spokesperson said.
