CBC Manitoba wants to dig into the issues that matter to Gen Z, so we're heading to the University of Manitoba to hear the stories that matter to students.

CBC Manitoba journalist Gavin Axelrod, videographer Travis Golby and Community Connection Senior Producer Nadia Kidwai will be spending time digging into stories that matter to this unique community.

Our job is to tell stories that reflect our province's many people and places. Communities in Focus often travels to different parts of Manitoba, and this year we're committed to exploring the issues that matter to Gen Z. Last November, we set up shop at RRC Polytech and started this exploration. Now, we want to get to know what matters to the community at the University of Manitoba!

Where we'll be

We'll be setting up shop on the Fort Garry campus in the UMSU University Centre fireside lounge.

Welcome event: To introduce ourselves to the UM community, and to allow the community to introduce itself to us, join us 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20. Please come say hello, grab a bite to eat and tell us a bit about your community (free lunch will be provided for up to 500 students).

Panel discussions: Thursday, Jan 23 and Thursday, Jan 30 at 12:00 pm, we will be hosting informal but informative panel discussions where your fellow students take the lead and give us their perspectives on issues of the day. Join us, and enjoy a coffee and a donut. Text us your ideas for what YOU want to talk about: 204-296-0846.

Live shows: We'll be broadcasting Up to Speed live from UM, Wednesday, Jan. 22 and Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.. Come by, watch the show, and enjoy a coffee and a donut.

CBC Asks Townhall: Join us in the Fireside Lounge on Tuesday, January 28 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. as we dig into the key issues facing international students today.

Office Hours: Community Connection Senior Producer Nadia Kidwai will be holding office hours Jan. 21, 22 and 24, and 27, 28, 29 and 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - please swing by for a chat and to share your story or ask a question.

Share your stories

The goal of the Communities in Focus initiative is to meet people, hear their stories and then share those stories. We want to tell stories that reflect and represent our province and that's why we need your help! Whether you're at Fort Garry campus, or Bannatyne or any of UM's other campuses, we want to hear from you.

Got a story to share? If you have a story idea, please get in touch by email: nadia.kidwai@cbc.ca or call 204-296-0846.

CBC Manitoba's Communities in Focus series

This is not CBC Manitoba's first Communities in Focus tour. Over the last year, CBC Manitoba has set up community news bureaus in the Interlake, Poplar River First Nation, Lac du Bonnet, and even explored Gen Z at RRC Polytech last November. From north to south, our province has so many intriguing stories to share.
