Person taken to hospital, dog dead after car flips in cemetery pond on Sunday morning

Staff at a cemetery near Winnipeg's west perimeter found a car upside down in a pond at the site on Sunday morning.

Police were called to Chapel Lawn Cemetery on Portage Avenue at 9:40 a.m. after the car crashed into the retention pond, a Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson said.

One person was rescued from the car and taken to hospital in stable condition, said Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service spokesperson Kristin Cuma. A dog was found dead inside the car, Cuma said.

A spokesperson for the fire paramedic service said their crews responded at 9:12 a.m.

Later Sunday morning, the car was still submerged in the water. Police are investigating the incident.
