A 74-year-old man was beaten in an unprovoked attack Wednesday afternoon as he was walking toward the urgent care entrance of a Winnipeg hospital, police say.

Police were called to Seven Oaks Hospital with a report of the assault shortly after 5 p.m.

Security at the hospital told officers the senior had suffered upper-body injuries after an assault, and the attacker had fled, the police service said in a Saturday news release.

Through investigation, officers learned a man approached the 74-year-old just outside the hospital and physically assaulted him without provocation, causing the senior to fall and hit his head on the sidewalk, knocking him out.

The attacker ran away before police arrived. The senior was stabilized and treated in hospital.

Police identified a 30-year-old man as a suspect and arrested him during an unrelated service call late Thursday night.

The 30-year-old man was charged with assault and found to have an outstanding immigration warrant with the Canadian Border Services Agency.

He is in custody and the CBSA has been alerted, police said.
