Mark Phillips, 36, appeared in a St Thomas court Friday via video link from the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.
There is a publication ban on the evidence at the hearing.
The court learned that Phillips has retained high-profile Toronto defence lawyer Steven Skurka to represent him.
Phillips is the great grandson of former Toronto Mayor Nathan Phillips.
He is charged with aggravated assault and three counts of assault with a weapon.
