London police crack down on street racers in 12 day period
More than 250 charges have been laid as part of a crackdown on racing and loud mufflers led by the London Police Service.
Between April 21 and May 2, the police force's Service Traffic Management Unit targeted vehicles for speeding, and for modified or "excessively loud" exhaust systems.
In all, police laid a total of 115 charges against individuals driving a vehicle with no muffler or improper muffler, 103 for speeding, 35 for causing noise likely to disturb, eight for racing and/or stunt driving and seven for unnecessary noise.
Anybody charged with stunt driving will face an immediate suspension and vehicle impoundment and can face up to a $10,000 fine and six months in jail. The penalty for driving a vehicle with no muffler or an improper one is $85.
Police are reminding drivers to slow down, and asking those with modified exhaust systems to repair them and avoid using devices to alter or increase the sound of their vehicles.
