Two teens have been charged with public mischief after calling 911 and falsely reporting a stabbing had taken place in a Kitchener park.

Police received a report that someone had been stabbed in Kitchener's Victoria Park at 7:20 a.m. on Sunday.

"Through extensive investigation, it was determined that the alleged stabbing did not take place and that the call to police was made intentionally to initiate a response from emergency services," the Waterloo Regional Police Service said in a release.

A 13-year-old  and a 14-year-old, both from Waterloo, have been charged with public mischief.

Police said in the media release that people need to remember 911 is only to be called "if there is an immediate risk to the safety of people or property."

"When misused, it ties up resources that may be needed at other serious and life-threatening incidents," police said.
